TSSAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
CHATTANOOGA RIVERSIDE VS CHATTANOOGA HOWARD 60-53 WIN!
The Mighty Riverside Trojans' only loss that season came at the hands of Memphis Melrose. John Gunn hit a turn around jumper at the buzzer to give Melrose the victory. This remarkable season also had high drama as Riverside traveled to Kingsport and defeated then #1 ranked Dobyns-Bennett in it's own brand new field house.
The 1972 State Champion Trojans never looked back after the Melrose loss by winning 31straight games! The champs averaged 80 points per game while holding opponents to an average of 60 points per game!
We had a REAL SCARE in a sub state tournament game with McMinn County. By slowing the game down to a crawl McMinn County almost pulled off one of the BIGGEST upsets in the history of Tenessee high school basketball!
My one regret is that we didn't get to play Memphis Melrose again that year!
Of course the crowning jewel of the season was the FIVE beat downs of rival Howard High School. The last and MOST satisfying being for the TSSAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP ITSELF!!
